Oh ok, I know what your thinking. What is a Hydro Chicken? Its what everyone asks us, so here it is in brief.

Back around mid 1997 the boys threw a huge party, for a good cause too UADA (Under Age Drinkers Anonymous). The boys had just returned from a carb packing episode of Mackers and decided to retire on the back stairs. Conversation covered a wide range of topics but finally the subject of smoking pot arose.

By this time several slabs of beer had been consumed, and shamefully it was VB (Victoria Bitter). Now it was not through personal experience, but through mutual agreement and general opinion that hydroponic pot was far more stronger than normal. The host of this social gathering (his name J a s o n, will be changed to Fred to protect the inocent) tend to disagree and came to the conclusion that it was as stupid as a Hydroponic Chicken. After the laughter stopped from the outburst of the inebriated Fred, the idea came for the name of our Volleyball team. Coincidently by this time the munchies had set in, now we all like chicken so it came down to a majority vote that Chickadee Chicken would be our next stop. Then finally the vital question came forth from Fred. If hydro pot is great then imagine if you could smoke hydro chicken, wouldn't that be better? This story may sound dumb to some of you sheltered people, unlike Fred. but the name has lived on and so has the team. (Please note that The Hydro Chickens do not endorse nor use drugs. Drugs are bad Mkayee…)


The Hydro Chickens joined Newcastle Volleyball in February 1999. I think we came last or second last in C div though. The team mainly consisted of the Whitbridge High School team from 1997, who finished 3rd in the region thank you very much. Since then we have been up and down the ladder, won 12 games straight only to be beaten in the final, played in state cup with out winning a set, had countless forfeits and still looking for our first title. Not looking to good now I have just realized. The main thing is we love our Volleyball, usually having fun that is the key when playing any sport.
